Sunkworks MANET Radio – Tactical Mesh Communications Node

The Sunkworks MANET Radio is a rugged, open-source tactical mesh networking device built for reliable off-grid communications in demanding environments. Powered by a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4) with Morse Micro 802.11ah (Wi-Fi HaLow) hardware, it delivers long-range, low-power wireless connectivity with Wi-Fi speeds up to 14 Mbps — ideal for emergency networks, disaster response, military, law enforcement, SAR, hiking, and prepper applications.

Key Features:

•  802.11ah Wi-Fi HaLow Mesh: Extended range and superior penetration through foliage, buildings, and urban obstacles compared to traditional 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi. Supports configurable channels (e.g., 916 MHz band) with 2/4/8 MHz bandwidth options and speeds up to 14 Mbps.

•  BATMAN-adv Mesh Protocol: Self-healing, decentralized mesh networking on OpenWRT for robust multi-hop connectivity. Configure as a mesh gate (10.41.0.1) or point with seamless internet sharing.

•  PTT Support for Military Headsets: Direct integration with Ops-Core, 3M, and other tactical headsets via push-to-talk for clear voice comms over the mesh.

•  Wireless 5 GHz Wi-Fi Meshing: Additional high-speed 5 GHz client/AP capabilities for local device connectivity, backhaul, or hybrid mesh setups.

•  Native ATAK Support: Full compatibility with Android Team Awareness Kit for real-time situational awareness, mapping, and data sharing over the mesh network. Tested with live video streaming across multi-node setups. GPS CoT ATAK Plugin coming soon for enhanced location tracking and Cursor-on-Target integration.

•  Rugged & Reliable Power: Compact CM4-based design with sealed enclosure, heatsink cooling, WaveShare UPS HAT (or equivalent) for continuous operation, 8+ hours of runtime, and portable/travel-ready configuration.
